LIS 950: Libraries and community

The purpose of this seminar is to explore an important topic in library and information studies in depth — in all its intertwined historical, cultural, philosophical, and political aspects — through a graduate reading/discussion seminar. The topic varies each time the course is taught; this time around, we will focus on "libraries and community"

More thoughts

OK, I finished the first 7 chapters. So far, I think I can break this book down into the following points:

Public Sphere....GOOD

Reaganomics....BAD

Business/Corporate Model....BAD

Library funding emphasis on technology....BAD

Library administrators....BAD

Customer-Driven Librarianship....BAD

ALA leadership....BAD

The Library Profession as a Whole....DOOMED!

Am I on the right track?

I agree with Irene on the main themes Buschman highlights but there seems to be more going on than just GOOD and BAD. Let me give another try, > are for Irene's assessment.

>Public Sphere....GOOD
I agree.

>Reaganomics....BAD
Seems to be Buschman's point but it places too much stock in the agency of Reagan.

>Business/Corporate Model....BAD
I agree when applied uncritically. If critical applied problems seem to be avoided.

>Library funding emphasis on technology....BAD
I agree when applied uncritically. If critical applied problems seem to be avoided.

>Library administrators....BAD
I seem to agree but this point really bothers me. It seems that too many library administrators have sold the profession off too cheaply.

>Customer-Driven Librarianship....BAD
Maybe customer-centered librarianship would seem better.

>ALA leadership....BAD
I do not know what to do with this assessment. However, some of the complaints about ALA's response to 9/11 also happened in WWI and WWII.

>The Library Profession as a Whole....DOOMED!
I refuse to believe that the profession as a whole is doomed.
